The Adair table is our tribute to English Rustic. Warm, inviting and a love letter to old world craftsmanship, featuring a hand-planed spruce top, pegged tenons, and a waxed finish.
"I grew up with an Antique English Pine farm table. It was constructed from Scottish Pine, and had a beaded apron, chunky turned legs, and pegged tenon frame. I loved that piece. No matter how much wear it received, it was always ready to host the next meal, its patina growing with time to reflect the meals, fights, laundry, and homework that took place on it's scratched and worn surface.
I had that very piece in mind when I set out to design the ideal table for my own home. A table that could take the test of time in both function and appearance. I love the work of the Shakers and substituted the chunky turned legs for something more minimalist. I then chose to use North American Spruce which is the local equivalent of Scottish pine. We custom built a small scratch-awl to add a custom beaded profile to the aprons, pegged the tenons with oak which was the standard of the day, and then planed and waxed every surface instead of sanding and finishing.
While most of our finishes involve a catalyzed hard wax oil for added durability, we intentionally made this piece with a waxed, hand-planed finish. This not only emphasizes the natural tear-out of the plane blades but it was the traditional finish of the day. Finally, while not as durable, it makes this piece incredibly easy to touch up at home.
